After topping the list of Best Small Cities in 2019, now, in 2022, Merida is among the top five Best Big Cities in the world, according to Condé Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards. Why? In short, because of its economic growth, its cuisine, colonial architecture, and cultural expressions.

This year, at the Readers' Choice Awards, Merida was recognized as the fourth best in the Best Big Cities category, surpassing cities such as Quebec, Montreal and Istanbul, and just under Singapore, Bangkok and Tokyo.

The Readers' Choice Awards are the most important awards within the travel industry, in celebration of the best places on the planet. On this occasion, about 250 thousand people completed the survey to vote on which of the cities they'd visited they preferred, and why. Finally, the winners were announced within the framework of awards' 35th anniversary.

Some of the aspects the magazine noted about Merida included the presence of Mayan culture and its living traditions and customs, easy access to UNESCO-recognized sites such as the archaeological zones of Uxmal and Chichen Itza, and its proximity to the beach and the port of Progreso.
